Bertif - A Legacy of Parisian Perfumes
Bertif is a Parisian perfume house that was founded in the 19th century, around 1857. The company was established by a Parisian pharmacist named Henri Bertif, who had a passion for creating fragrances that embodied the essence of the Belle Époque. Bertif quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality fragrances that were both elegant and sophisticated.
The perfumes were created using only the finest ingredients, sourced from all over the world. Bertif's signature scents were known for their floral and powdery notes, which were particularly popular among the upper-class women of Paris.
By 1900, Bertif had become a household name in Paris, and the company had opened several boutiques throughout the city. Henri Bertif continued to innovate and experiment, creating new fragrances that captured the spirit of the times.
La Belle Époque - A Timeless Classic
One of Bertif's most famous fragrances was called "La Belle Époque", which was released in 1901. The scent was inspired by the extravagant and glamorous lifestyle of the era, and it quickly became one of the most popular fragrances in Paris. La Belle Époque featured notes of jasmine, rose, violet, and vanilla, and it was often described as the quintessential Belle Époque scent.
As the years went on, Bertif continued to thrive, and the company expanded its product line to include body lotions, soaps, and other fragranced products. Henri Bertif remained at the helm of the company until his death in 1925, at which point his son, Jean Bertif, assumed control.
Despite facing challenges during World War I and the Great Depression, Bertif continued to produce high-quality fragrances until the occupation of Paris during World War II. Very little information can be found on the business or family after 1941.
The Revival of Bertif
In 2023, while doing research for a book, perfumer Guillaume discovered the history of the house. Deciding the name and fragrances of Bertif should not be dispatched to the dustbin of history, he has devoted his energies to researching and recreating the legacy scents of this once great but forgotten parfumerie, while creating a stunning new line of exquisite and timeless scents to bring the house forward into the 21st century.
Today Bertif is once again a family business operated by father & son.
